Second Saturdays: Outdoor Movies

One of the many things that makes small-town Oklahoma living so charming is how community activities feel like a gigantic family reunion.

At The Mayberry Foundation, we are firm believers in the fact that social events unite, increase morale and are part of the pulse of any small town.

We are thrilled to announce The Mayberry Foundation will be hosting “Second Saturdays,” an outdoor movie series in 2014. Whether you are looking for a date idea, a family activity, or a way to reminisce about packing a convertible with friends at a drive-in, Second Saturdays will offer it all.

The movies will be shown — you guessed it — on the second Saturday of each month from May-August. Gates will open at 7 p.m., and shows will begin at dark, under the stars and will be projected on a large screen staged at the Cleveland High School track on Gilbert Street. You can bring lawn chairs and blankets, and you will have a football-field length of grass to enjoy the films.

The opening night movie on May 10, “Frozen,” is sponsored by Cleveland’s new Citizens Bank. Two weeks before each movie, we will announce the title. All titles will be family-friendly favorites and classics that ages 1-100 will enjoy.

Spending time with your community — whether it is at a football or baseball game, a parade, a chili supper or an outdoor movie — brings people closer together as a group, a team, and ultimately, a huge family.

Unity = Strength.

And part of our mission, with your help, is to build Cleveland back to its strongest of days.

Let’s take another step together.

See you at the show!

—> Things we feel will make Second Saturdays extra special:

  • Several generous local sponsors have helped us defray the cost of obtaining movie rights so we can lawfully show you films outdoors; however, we have many other costs associated with bringing you a quality event. We don’t want the event to hurt your wallet, so we will not be charging admission, but we will be accepting donations at the gate. Feel free to drop any amount, none too small and whatever makes you comfortable, in the buckets. Your donations will help us continue Second Saturdays and other events like it for as long as possible.
  • Concessions will be available at reasonable prices, and all proceeds will go to continuing projects at the foundation. We’ll update here closer to opening night when we have our “menu” nailed down.
  • We will reserve parking spots close to the northeast front gate at the track for those who have handicaps and disabilities. In addition, we will have volunteers to assist with carrying lawn chairs for those with a need, and we will have golf carts and volunteers to shuttle senior citizens from other lots to the field.

—> We have one basic rule of Second Saturdays, which is simply a request to be courteous of others, which includes the following:

  • No high-back lawn chairs
  • No pets
  • No ice chests
  • No flashlights
  • No umbrellas
  • Remove cowboy hats
  • Please clean trash out of your area before leaving so the school will continue to allow us to use the facility.
  • Please keep phones on silent and stashed away. The bright screen, even with texting, can be distracting to those around you.
